SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team is back in action on Friday and Saturday in a three-game set against Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana University at Cardinals Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at noon.
The Cardinals (10-14, 2-1) are coming off a pair of wins at Prairie View A&M where the team scored 35 runs. Junior
Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) has been carrying the offense lately and is hitting .338 with a team high four home runs and 18 RBI's.
Danielle Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) was back in the lineup after missing some games with an injury and she is hitting .380 with a team high 11 runs and seven stolen bases. The team has received a boost from senior
Monique Miller (Hewitt/Midway HS) who missed the first 18 games of the season. She is 5-for-8 with six runs and four walks since getting back in the lineup.
The UIW pitching staff is led by
Sarah Leal (Kyle/Hays HS) who has a 3-3 record and a 4.39 earned run average in 36.2 innings. All five of the team's pitchers have made at least four starts on the season.
The Lions (14-12, 0-3) opened the Southland schedule last week with three straight losses to Abilene Christian. Kinsey Nichols, Katie Lacour and Amber Sather lead a strong offense. Nichols is hitting .455 with 17 RBI's and 14 stolen bases. Lacour has a .440 batting average with 31 runs scored and 26 runs batted in. Sather has three home runs, 25 RBI's and a .394 batting average. Taylor Bishop is the main pitcher for the team. She is 8-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 92.1 innings.
