Scelfo Shines at Manning Passing Academy

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word senior quarterback Jordan Scelfo (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe HS) put on a passing display over the weekend at the Manning Passing Academy Air-It-Out competition at John L. Guidry Stadium in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Scelfo finished in a tie for second place among the 45 college quarterbacks competing on Saturday.  Baylor University's Seth Russell won the Spalding Golden Arm trophy that went to the winner of the Papa John's Quarterback Challenge.  The college quarterbacks had to hit three golf carts to advance in the competition.  The first two traveled across the field 10 yards, and then 20 yards, away from the competitors.  The final golf cart traveled up the sideline.

Seven players advanced to the second round including Scelfo and Russell: Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State, Keller Chryst of Stanford, Nate Sudfeld of Indiana, Chad Voytik of Pittsburgh and Jeff Ziemba of Shepherd.  Scelfo, Russell, Chryst and Sudfeld advanced again to compete for the title with Russell coming out on top in the third round.

This was the fourth straight year that Scelfo has been invited to the camp as a counselor.  "It is a great experience to get to work with the kids and help them with their training and technique," said Scelfo, whose father is the quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  "We get to work with Peyton (Manning) and Eli in the morning and then we get to be on the other side of things as a coach the rest of the day."

The camp had 1,250 junior high and high school campers from 42 states and Canada.  As a counselor, Scelfo was in charge of a specific drill and then he coached a 7-on-7 team in the evenings.

Scelfo was a bright spot for the Cardinals last year.  He began the season as a backup, but eventually took over the starting quarterback role for the final four games of the season.  He led the team in passing and had two games with at least 250 yards through the air.

Scelfo and the Cardinals open the 2015 season on September 5 when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville at Benson Stadium.  Go to www.uiwtix.com for ticket information.
