Cardinals Fall Short to SLU in a Gritty Defensive Battle

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word football team falls short to Southern Louisiana University 10-7 on Nov. 15 at Benson Stadium for the final home game of the season.

Jalen Walthall caught eight balls for 130 yards for his third 100-yard contest of the season. Jaylon Spears and Timothy Carter both rushed and gained 180 yards collectively. Linebacker Dune Smith led the defense with 14 tackles and added one pass breakup.

The UIW senior day game featured both teams punting 14 times in a gritty defensive battle in the final Cardinal home game of the 2025 season.

The fifth play into the game found Walthall sneak behind Lion defenders for a 50-yard snag into the SLU redzone. This catch put Walt over the 2,000-yard mark for his UIW career. He is now one of four receivers in Cardinal history to reach this feat.

The Cards and Lions would also come up short by missing a field goal, leaving both teams scoreless after the first two drives.

Halfway into the second quarter, the Lions score a 22-yard field goal for the first points of the contest.

A 37-yard reception kicks off the third quarter for the Lions, increasing the lead to 10-0. This quarter would continue with multiple punted possessions from both teams.

The fourth was a complete juxtaposition, starting with Spears' second 30+ yard rush of the game, breaking three tackles in the process. This nine-play drive would end in a punt for the Cardinals.

Eight minutes left into the quarter, EJ Colson scrambles through Lion defenders and reaches for a 27-yard gain into the SLU redzone. 99 yards of Cardinal offense this drive ended with a Timothy Carter touchdown as UIW looks to come back 10-7.

The following UIW possession saw the offense on fourth down on the Cardinal 26-yard line with the game on the line. Carter, once again, advances the Cardinals by converting the 4th and 3.

This drive had another scene of adversity for the Cardinals developed as Colson and the offense were face-to-face with a 3rd and 25 down. He answered by throwing up a prayer ball into Lion territory and laid it into the hands of Walthall between two defenders for a 57-yard reception, his second 50-yard catch of the game.

Cardinal kicker Will Faris lines up for a 38-yard field goal attempt to tie this defensive battle. The ball was launched towards the uprights of the goal but was scraped by a Lion defender, nailing the bottom left corner of the goal and concluding in a  10-7 Cardinal loss.
