Colonels Shut Down Cardinals

THIBODAUX, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped to 2-9 in the Southland Conference after a second straight loss to Nicholls on Saturday, 6-1 at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels (17-12-1, 7-7) did not waste any time getting on the board. They scored an unearned run in the first inning on a throwing error that allowed Justin Holt to score. Holt then singled up the middle in the second inning to bring in David Zorn to make it 2-0.

UIW (11-18, 2-9) cut the lead in half in the third inning on an error by the shortstop off the bat of Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS). Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) came in to score after reaching base via walk, but the Cardinals would not score the rest of the game.

The Colonels' Grant Borne held the Cardinals to three hits in six innings of work, allowing one unearned run, walking seven and striking out six to earn the win.  Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) got tabbed with the loss despite working into the seventh inning. He gave up five runs (four earned), 10 hits and two walks while striking out four in 6.2 innings.  He is now 4-3 on the season.  Adam Hunter (Yoakum/Yoakum HS) pitched 1.1 innings in relief and allowed only one unearned run, one hit and struck out one for the Cardinals.

Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) finished the game 1-for-2 with two walks as part of the 5-7 hitters who finished 3-for-8, while the rest of the Cardinals offense finished 1-for-20.
Holt led the Colonels with three hits and two RBI's and also added a run on the night. Alex Shermer and Tanner Vandevere both finished 2-for-4, with Vandevere scoring twice and pushing in a run.  Shermer had two RBI's.

Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when the Cardinals will look to salvage the last game of the series to avoid their second conference sweep of the season.
