LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team is headed to New Mexico State this weekend for a three-game series with the Aggies. They play Friday at 7:05 p.m. and then they start at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Cardinals (4-6) are hitting .246 as a team this year and have only scored one run in the last three games.
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) still leads the team with a .343 batting average and eight run while hitting a pair of home runs.
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) has driven in eight runs and has made three scoreless relief appearances on the mound.
Ethan McGill (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union HS) is hitting .294 with a team high four doubles.
The rotation for UIW this weekend will be
Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS),
Brandon Anderson (Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne Central HS) and
Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS). Cooper is 2-0 with a 1.20 earned run average in 15.0 innings and Anderson is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 14.0 innings. Looper is 0-1 and lost his start to Notre Dame last week.
Adam Hunter (Yoakum/Yoakum HS) and
Chris Jones (Hallettsville/Hallettsville HS) have each pitched well out of the bullpen. The team has a 5.55 ERA this year.
The Aggies are still looking for their first win of the year and this will be their home opening weekend. Quinnton Mack is hitting .286 with six extra base hits and a .607 slugging percentage to lead the offense. Riley Barr and Matt Loeffler have each been very good on the mound. Barr has an 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings, but does not have a decision. Loeffler also has no decision in two starts with a 3.00 ERA in 12.0 innings of work.
