Box Score EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team exploded for a season high 14 runs on Tuesday night in a 14-3 victory at UT-Pan American that was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Cardinals (10-20) scored early and scored often in the game. They scored once in the first, three times in the second and twice in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. UIW put the game away in the fifth inning when they scored six times and sent 12 players to the plate.
Freshman Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) gave the Cardinals a strong outing on the mound. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, he settled down over the next four innings. He gave up just a walk and a hit while striking out six in his final four innings. He earned his first career victory and struck out a career high seven. Matthew Decker (Hickory Creek/Lake Dallas HS) pitched a scoreless inning of relief and Alex Shaffer (Seattle/Nathan Hale HS) tossed the final two innings giving up an unearned run.
The UIW offense rapped out 14 hits and drew eight walks. Jason Stone (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) and Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) each broke out of slumps with three hits apiece. Stone was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI's and a walk while Shepherd went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI's, a double and a hit by pitch. Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS) added two hits, two runs, two RBI's and a double while Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) drove in three.
The Broncs (13-22) were stymied on offense with just six hits and one walk while striking out nine times. Alberto Morales had two doubles and scored a run and Victor Garcia Jr. drove in two runs. Clayton Haltom took the loss after allowing four runs in 1.0 inning of work.
The Cardinals are on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
