Tennis Splits with MSU

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams split with visiting Midwestern State on Saturday at the Mabry Tennis Center.  The UIW men won 4-3 and the women lost 6-1.

The men's result came down to a pair of crucial matches.  The first came at #2 doubles where Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) lost to Kacper Boborykin and Kyle Davidson in a tie-break.  They won 6-5 (7-5) to clinch the lone point in doubles play.

The Cardinals (3-2) came back in singles play.  Assuncao and Brown won at #1 and #4 singles, respectively, in straight sets to even up their tough doubles loss.  Leonard Ivic (Split, Croatia/Laredo CC) was the only UIW player to win both of his matches.  His win at #1 doubles went for naught, but he also won his #2 singles match in straight sets.

The match came down to Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) at #5 singles.  He split the first two sets with Tomas Grejtak and then outlasted him in the third set to grab a 6-4 win to clinch the team victory.

The UIW women were not as fortunate against the Mustangs.  The visitors swept all three doubles matches and nearly swept the singles matches.  Only the Cardinals' #1 player, Ivana Katavic (Split, Croatia/Laredo CC) was able to win her match.  She defeated Kayla Casey 6-2, 7-5.

Both Cardinals teams are back in action on Sunday against UT-Pan American.  The women's match starts at 10 a.m. and the men's match is at 2 p.m.
