Men's Tennis Remains Perfect in SLC with Road Win

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team got back to its winning way on Monday, defeating the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 5-2 in a Southland Conference match from the Mabry Tennis Center.

Incarnate Word improves to 11-3 overall with a perfect 3-0 SLC record, while UT Rio Grande Valley falls to 5-15 with a 1-2 conference mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word gained an early point by winning all three doubles matches, starting with a 6-4 win at No. 1 by the tandem of sophomore Marcel Miralles and freshman Santiago Flyckt.
  • The No. 3 court saw grad student Emilio Vila and Augustin Salazar collect a 6-4 win, followed by a 7-6 (7-5) triumph at No. 2 by the sophomore duo of Alexandre Chauvel and Alejandro Hernandez.
  • UTRGV opened singles play with a win at No. 3 before Salazar put the Cardinals back in front with a 6-1, 7-5 win in the fourth flight.
  • Vila extended the advantage with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win on court No. 2, but the Vaqueros scored their final point of the match with a three-set win on court five.
  • Hernandez put the match away at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 6-0 victory, while Flyckt finished off the day with a 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 win in the sixth flight.

The Cardinals continue conference play on Saturday, April 4, when the team travels to Beaumont, Texas, for an 11:00 a.m. match against Lamar University.
