First Half Deficit Halts UIW

Box Score NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team could not overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in a 79-59 loss at Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at the Johnson Coliseum.

The Lady Jacks (12-9, 6-3) outscored the Cardinals (8-12, 2-6) 27-12 over the final 8:25 of the first half.  It proved to be too much to overcome for UIW.  They committed 11 turnovers in the half that turned into 16 points for SFA.

In the second half, the Cardinals and Lady Jacks played nearly even.  Neither team scored more than six consecutive points.  The closest the UIW could get was within 15 points with 11:51 remaining.

The Cardinals shot 43.5 percent from the field, made 4-of-11 from three-point range and were 15-of-17 at the foul line.  Freshman Shelby Leinneweber (Floresville/Floresville HS) led the team with a career high 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench.  Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added 13 points, five assists and three steals while Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) contributed 13 points and six rebounds.  The team had 22 rebounds and 17 turnovers.

The Lady Jacks shot 54.4 percent from the field, made 6-of-16 from three-point range and were 11-of-13 at the foul line.  Antionette Carter poured in 17 points off the bench to lead the team.  Porsha Roberts had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks while shooting 7-of-9 from the field.  Taylor Ross contributed 13 points, six assists and three steals.  They had 33 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
