Women's Soccer Final Home Stand

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer teams plays their final two home games of the year this weekend.  They host McNeese State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Lamar on Sunday at noon.

The Cardinals (1-11-2, 1-4-2) are coming off a 1-1 tie last weekend against Abilene Christian.  The team's leading scorer is Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School) with three goals and an assist despite missing the last three games with an injury, but she should be back on the field this week.  The team has been playing well lately going 1-1-2 in their last four matches.  Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) has earned the starting goalkeeper spot and has a 1.87 goals against average with 35 saves.

McNeese (6-8-1, 4-4-0) will play UIW after a two game winning streak. The Cowgirls beat out Northwestern State, 2-1 and they defeated Lamar University in overtime, 1-0 this past Friday.  MSU goalkeeper Maggie Marks has allowed 13 goals and has collected 28 saves. Savannah LaRicci will be pushing the Cowgirls offense with her five goals and two assists.

Lamar (4-10-1, 2-5-1) is sitting directly in front of the UIW in the conference standings.  Kimmy Albeno leads the offensive attack with seven goals and an assist.  Kristin Bos, Taylor Mitchell and Jannet Hernandez each have three assists.  Bailey Fontenot has started all 15 games in goal making 97 saves and she has a 1.66 GAA.

The Cardinals have five seniors who will be honored on Senior Day prior to the Lamar game.  Johnson, Kiana Tipton (Edmonds, WA/Woodway HS) and Amanda Watkins (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) have played all four years with the Cardinals while Jazma Latu (San Antonio/Johnson HS) and Kathryn Mundy (Houston/Pope John XXIII) are in their third seasons on the field.  Johnson has appeared in 59 games scoring 12 goals and eight assists.  Latu has eight goals and an assist in 44 games.  Mundy has two goals, two assists and two game-winning goals in 41 appearances.  Tipton has played 55 games as a defender while Watkins has six goals and four assists in 65 career games.
