SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's swimming & diving teams open up their 2014-15 home schedule on Friday at the Barshop Natatorium. The men will take on Texas A&M while the women are competing against North Texas.
The meet begins at 5 p.m. with 3-meter diving and the swimming events start promptly at 6 p.m. North Texas defeated SMU and Tulane in their only meet this year. Texas A&M finished last year ranked #22 in the nation and opened this year with a 153-115 loss at Texas.
The UIW women are swimming their fourth meet of the season and are 1-2 overall. Senior
Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) has been the top swimmer on the team this year winning the 50-yard freestyle at every meet. She has also done well in the 100 freestyle with a win and two runner-up finishes.
Adrienne Morrow (Hot Springs, AR/Hot Springs HS) has been outstanding as well with a pair of wins in the 200 freestyle.
Daria Makieieva (Mariupol, Ukraine/Olimpic Reserve of Sergey Bubka) and
Celeste Morgen (San Antonio/Johnson HS) give the Cardinals a strong 1-2 punch in the breaststroke events.
The Cardinals have a strong diving team with
Kali Lents (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and Kim Foster (Spring/Oak Ridge HS). Lents was the CCSA Diver of the Week this past week after winning both diving events against Florida Gulf Coast.
The UIW men are the defending CCSA Champions, but they lost a number of top performers to graduation. They have yet to swim a meet this year and are opening with Texas A&M for a second straight season.
Sophomore
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) is the top returner for the Cardinals after earning CCSA Freshman of the Year and Freshman of the Meet honors last year. His strengths are in the individual medley and breaststroke events.
Alex Brouwer (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep) is the top freestyle sprinter on the team and was the CCSA champion in the 50 freestyle.
Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) is a strong distance swimmer who can swim a variety of events.
