UIW Laps the Cougars

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's swimming and diving team defeated University of Houston on Saturday at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium, 124-117. (Results)

The meet was close throughout with the Cardinals holding a slight advantage for the majority of the time.  UIW won three of the first four races, but the Cougars got back into the meet by sweeping the first three places in both diving events.

"First, I'm very proud of our women's team for many reasons,  but this victory was a great testament to our program as a whole, the coaches, the swimmers, and the divers," said UIW head coach Phil Davis.  "We had some very good senior and upper classman leadership all weekend, and it feels great to see their hard work paying off.  We asked some women to do some things that we knew that wouldn't be too excited about, but they handled that like great teammates do and it was the difference today."

The meet came down to the final two events in the pool.  UIW picked up big points in the 100-yard breaststroke behind a 1-2 finish by Celeste Morgen (San Antonio/Johnson HS) and Daria Makieieva (Mariupol, Ukraine/Olimpic Reserve).  Morgen won the race in a time of 1:04.95.  The final race of the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay and the Cardinals squad of Abby Meyer (Austin/Bowie HS), Adrienne Morrow (Hot Springs, AR/Hot Springs HS), Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) and Lauren Bennett (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) were able to hold off the Cougars with a time of 3:33.01.

The Cardinals won both relays as the 400-yard medley squad of Ashley Wayman (Universal City/Judson HS), Morgen, Claudia Bernier (Cedar Hill/Cedar Hill HS) and Kristina Prewit (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) won in a time of 3:57.96.  Morrow followed with a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.67.

Nguyen dominated the sprint freestyle events for the Cardinals.  She won her second straight 50-yard event in two days with a time of 23.75.  She came back in the 100 freestyle and won in a time of 52.13 which was significantly faster than she swam on Friday at Rice.

The final victory of the meet for the Cardinals was by Wayman in the 100-yard backstroke.  She swam a strong race and nearly broke one minute with a time of 1:00.02.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. at Florida Gulf Coast University.
