Women Drop SLC Opener

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell in their Southland Conference home opener to Central Arkansas on Thursday at the McDermott Center, 60-40.

The Cardinals (7-8, 1-2) played well for the first 18 minutes of the game, but were not able to put together two strong halves.  Led by senior point guard Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS), the Cardinals stood tied with the Sugar Bears (9-6, 3-1) with 2:00 left in the half.  Douglas had 10 points and four steals for the club in the first half.

Central Arkansas closed out the half on a 7-1 run to take a 25-19 lead into the break.  They came out of the break strong and a 15-0 run five minutes into the second stanza sealed the game for the visitors who dominated on the inside.  They outscored UIW, 34-22 on points in the paint and had 12 more rebounds than the Cardinals.

The Cardinals shot 26.7 percent from the field, went 1-for-7 from three-point range and were 15-of-20 at the foul line.  Douglas led the team with 16 points, five steals and four rebounds.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) put in 10 points, but was limited due to foul trouble and only played 21 minutes. 

The Sugar Bears shot 51.0 percent from the field, went 1-of-5 from three-point range and were 7-for-12 at the charity stripe.  Courtney Duever was the driving force for the team with 14 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.  She went 7-of-10 from the field in 25 minutes of play.  Brianna Mullins added 14 points as well.  As a team, UCA blocked nine shots.

The Cardinals played in front of their largest home crowd, 752 and suffered their first home loss of the season.  They are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against Oral Roberts.
