Cardinals Top Bears in Overtime

Box Score CONWAY, ARKANSAS – In a match that had just about everything you could ask for the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team outlasted Central Arkansas on the road with a 4-3 overtime victory thanks to Victor Pinal's (Dallas/Skyline HS) two goals.

The match was a back and forth affair that saw the Cardinals (1-1) take the lead three different times in regulation only to see the Bears (1-1) come back and tie the game each time. UIW took the early advantage Pinal received a brilliant pass from central defender James Nero (Charlotte, NC/Olympia HS) and fired past the goalkeeper from seven yards out at 7:13. UCA tied the contest at 1-1 when Jaden Hoth's blast from the top of the box deflected off a defender and went in the goal at 17:52.

The match was moving along when lightning struck in the area and forced nearly a 90-minute delay for the teams at the half hour mark. When play resumed, the Cardinals pressed forward, but were unable to put another goal on the board before halftime.

The second half began in much the same way the first half did with the Cardinals scoring quickly. All-American midfielder Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) pounced on his first goal of the year off a nice cross from Alex De La Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) in the six-yard box at 49:24.

The Bears tied the game at 2-2 against the run of play when they earned a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Logan Miller calmly stepped up and scored a goal at 65:30.

Exactly nine minutes later, it looked like De La Garza had scored the game-winning goal for the Cardinals when he buried one past the keeper from 15 yards out on the top left of the box at 74:30. It was not to be though and the Bears tied it up at 3-3 just over two minutes later when Wes Carson connected on a cross from Miller at 76:32. Carson would nearly win the game in regulation taking three more shots that required two saves from UIW goalkeeper Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS).

The script of the game held true in overtime with the Cardinals once again scoring early from the restart. Pinal was set up by a pass from Placide Buduri and buried the shot from 10 yards out into the bottom left corner of the goal to give UIW an exciting 4-3 victory at 96:03.

The Cardinals outshot the Bears 14-9 and had three more shots on goal. The game got a little heated with a total of six yellow cards being shown with four going to UIW. Kahan picked up the win in goal for UIW making two saves while his counterpart Patxi Shortsleeve made four saves, but was handed the loss.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA for a match against St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m. to be played on the campus of Pitt.
