WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams traveled to Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State on Friday and came away with a split as the men won, 5-4 while the women lost, 7-2 at the MSU Tennis Center.
The UIW men, ranked #19 in the country, only won one doubles match, but came back with four singles victories to top the #31 Mustangs (4-1, 0-1).
The Cardinals (5-2, 1-0) top duo of
Jair Assuncao and
Mario Jakovljevic won at #1 doubles over Luke Joyce and Colby Meeks by a 9-7 score. Assuncao came back with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Meeks at #2 singles while Jakovljevic knocked off Kyle Davidson, 6-3, 6-3 at #3 singles.
The Cardinals picked up their other two points at #1 and #4 singles. Leo Ivic topped Joyce 6-2, 6-2 at the #1 spot while
Brandon Davis finished off the match at #4 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Franko Siljeg.
The UIW women were not as fortunate as they dropped a tough match to the Mustangs (5-1, 1-0). The Cardinals (4-3, 1-1) won one doubles match and lost another 8-6. The only took one point in singles play and had another match go into the third set before ending in a loss.
Ivana Katavic and
Andi Botha topped Taylor Coffman and Sarita Adhikary 8-7 (4) at #1 doubles. They nearly picked up a point at #3 doubles, but
Taryn Strahl and
Jennifer Betancourt lost 8-6 to Kayla and Kendra Casey.
Nicole Karaklis was the only singles winner for the Cardinals taking a point at #4 over Fatima Clementino 6-4, 6-2. Betancourt was dealt a tough loss at #6 to Lauren Pineda 2-6, 7-5, 14-12.
