Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team closed out 2013 with a 102-73 win over visiting Huston-Tillotson on Monday night at McDermott Center. It was the second time this year the Cardinals (11-1) have eclipsed the century mark.
The Cardinals have shot the ball well in nearly every game this year and it was no different on Monday as they shot 55.9 percent from the field including an impressive 61.5 percent in the first half. The game was never really in doubt as the UIW offense was clicking on all cylinders througout scoring 50 points in the first half and 52 in the second half.
In addition to their strong offense this season, the Cardinals have also been solid on the defensive end. They held the Rams (1-9) to 35.5 percent shooting fromt he field and only 28.2 percent in the second half. UIW had six different players combine for eight blocks in the game. The Cardinals are holding opponents to 36.0 percent shooting from the field for the season, tops in the Southland Conference.
The Cardinals went 33-of-59 from the field, 9-of-22 from three-point range and 27-of-40 at the foul line. They had five players score in double figures led by the 24 points, five rebounds and five assists from guard
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS). Livingston was 9-for-11 from the field and 5-for-5 at the foul line.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) added 20 points and nine rebounds.
Anthony Horton and
Sam Burmeister each scored 15 points while
Justin Philippe came off the bench to score 10 points and grab nine rebounds.
The Cardinals pulled down seven more rebounds than the Rams, but committed six more turnovers.
The Rams were 27-of-76 from the field, 5-of-20 on three-point attempts and 14-of-19 from the foul line. Post player Ronzelle Fort led the team with 24 points and nine rebounds and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line. Sterling Lampley had 11 points and six boards and Terry Johnson finished with 10 points and three steals.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Our Lady of the Lake at home.
