COMMERCE, Texas - The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team picked up its second road win of the season against the East Texas A&M Lions on Saturday night.
Â
Tahj Staveskie scored 33 points while shooting 50 percent from the 3-point line.
Davion Bailey (18) and
Harold Woods (14) were the other Cardinals to put up double figures on the evening.
Â
It was an action packed first half that was kicked off by Staveskie who scored his first 10 points in less than nine minutes of play. The Cardinals made eight, 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play, shooting better than 50 percent from the field and from three on their way to building an 11 point lead 41-30. However, the Lions weren't going away easily, closing the first on a nine-to-two run only tailing by four at the break 43-39.
Â
The second half was more of the same with UIW holding onto its lead behind consistent scoring from Staveskie.
Â
That was until the Cardinals went scoreless for four straight minutes allowing East Texas to knot things up at 71. UIW would only give up one more bucket while scoring 12 more on the other end to escape with a key Southland conference victory.
Â
With three games remaining the Cardinals are tied with three other Southland programs at 6-12 in the SLC. They are only one game behind Northwestern State for the coveted eighth and final spot in the Southland Conference tournament.
