The Cardinals (12-6, 8-4) entered the matchup only a game behind the Mustangs (15-3, 10-2) in the standings, but did not lead for a single second. UIW held close through most of the first half, but MSU pulled away in the final few minutes to take a 39-28 lead heading into halftime.
The Cardinals whittled the lead down to five points after a jumper by
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) with 10:48 remaining in the game. The Cardinals had two chances to draw closer, but missed a layup and turned the ball over. The Mustangs followed with a 14-0 run over a 3:52 span to put the game away.
The Cardinals shot 31.3 percent from the field, made 1-of-10 from three-point range and were 11-of-14 at the foul line. Joslinn Douglass (Austin/Del Valle HS), Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) and
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) each scored 10 points in the game. Mora finished with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Douglass added four steals while Green finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals. The team had 36 rebounds and committed 14 turnovers.
The Mustangs shot 48.1 percent from the field, made 4-of-9 from three-point line and went 14-of-18 at the charity stripe. Andrea Carter led the team with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Kirsti Degelia added 12 points, eight assists and four steals while Lisa Hampton had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks. The team had 43 rebounds and committed 21 turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Cameron at 2 p.m.
