VOLLEYBALL SPLITS TWO AT TARLETON TOURNAMENT

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word closed out a successful weekend on Saturday at the Tarleton State Tournament by defeating New Mexico Highlands in three sets and losing to William Jewell in straight sets to go 3-1 for the tournament.

The Cardinals (3-5) swept past the Cowgirls (3-4) by a score of 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.  Sophomore Kelci Lind (Lindale/Lindale HS) led the UIW attack with 11 kills, nine digs and a .333 attack.  Leilani Lealaimatafao (San Antonio/Warren HS) and Baleigh Schaetter (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg HS) combined for 13 kills and a .393 attack.

The UIW attack pounded out 42 kills with a .294 attack percentage.  Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) and Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) evenly split 38 assists.  Defensively, Tina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) had four blocks and Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) led the team with 17 digs.

The Cowgirls had 36 kills, 39 digs and a .155 attack for the match.  Sarah Dirmeyer led the team with nine kills and a .400 attack.  Rae Mulitalo dished out 32 assists and Marina Samoa had 15 digs.

The results for UIW against the William Jewell Cardinals (4-4) were not quite as good as WJC won 25-23, 25-15, 25-20.  Lind led UIW with 11 kills, but it was Chavis who had the best match.  She had eight kills and a .727 attack while serving up two aces.

Incarnate Word was limited to 32 kills in the match and posted a .081 attack.  They accumulated 59 digs as Werchan led the way with 24.

William Jewell had 37 kills and a .203 attack while matching UIW with 59 digs.  Kaylee Marquardt led WJC with 10 kills while Hannah Herndon had nine kills and 20 digs.  Katie Damgar led the team with 21 digs and Cailynn Hayter dished out 20 assists.

Freshman Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) was named to the all-tournament team.  She racked up 31 kills, 33 digs and seven blocks in the four matches.

Incarnate Word is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. in the home opener against Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Commerce.
