UIW SPLITS GAME WITH MSU IN DAY TWO

Right fielder Alex Yarbrough hit a huge homer in a 6-4 win over MSU. Yarbrough leads UIW in home runs with five.
After a tough loss to Midwestern State on Friday, the Cardinals returned to Mustangs Park for a double-header on Saturday.  Early MSU scoring in the first game led to an 11-5 UIW loss.  The Cardinals were able to bounce back in the second game and grab a 6-4 win, ending the series with the Mustangs 1-2.

The first three innings of the first game were hard on the Cardinals.  While UIW wasn't able to score, the Mustangs put five runs on the board.  After a double from right fielder Alex Yarbrough, pinch runner Alex Zepeda made it to third base and then reached home on a wild pitch.  Coming in the fourth inning, Zepeda's run was the first one for the Cardinals.

With a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs weren't finished scoring yet.  MSU put up another five runs in the fourth, diminishing any chance for a UIW comeback.

The Cardinals would score another four runs over the next two innings, but those runs just wouldn't be enough and UIW would fall to the Mustangs 11-5.

UIW pitcher, Whitney Waltrip allowed 15 hits and 11 runs and is now 6-6.

The second game of the afternoon took on a much different tone for UIW.  With an unearned run in the third inning, the Cardinals would score first and set the pace for the rest of the game.

The Cardinals scored again in the fourth inning, and this time the Mustangs answered with huge four runs.  Now down 4-2, the Cardinals needed to make their move in order to prevent a 3-0 MSU series sweep.

With another run in both the fifth and sixth innings, the ball game was tied 4-4 going into the seventh.  Yarbrough stepped up to bat in the seventh and earned herself another RBI with a homerun to left center field.  Second baseman Melanie Padilla walked up to the plate after Yarbrough's homer and hit another one to left field.  These two runs were enough to give the Cardinals the edge in the second game and UIW won 6-4.

Cardinal pitcher Briana Sanchez allowed just six hits and four runs and improved her record to 12-5.

The Cardinals will hit the road again on March 27 for a double-header against Texas A&M International.  The first game will start at 2 p.m.
