It was a chilly day at Cardinals Field Thursday but that didn't seem to matter to the hitters as Incarnate Word beat Southeastern Oklahoma 4-1 with four of the five total scores coming on home runs.
The Cardinals are 3-0 while SE Oklahoma is 1-2.
Incarnate Word didn't wait long to ignite the fireworks. In the bottom of the first, with two outs, senior designated batter Lea Padilla crushed one to center field. Junior right fielder Alex Yarbrough reached on an infield error before Melanie Padilla hit one even harder to right center for two more tallies.
In the second UIW got another run when the Savage Storm pitcher Audra Rhudy (1-2) walked a pair of Cardinals ahead of a center field, RBI single by sophomore shortstop Ashley Freeman.
Southeastern's only run came in the top of the fourth when third baseman Sam Vrska did what else, hit a home run to left center.
Sophomore right hander Whitney Waltrip (2-0) worked five innings for the win allowing the lone run on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Briana Sanchez came on in the sixth to strike out five batters in picking up the save.
UIW now turns its attention to its own two-day round-robin series Friday and Saturday with Emporia State and St. Mary's. All the games are on the Incarnate Word campus beginning with the two visitors meeting at noon followed by the Cardinals and St. Mary's at 2:30 p.m. When the dust settles Saturday evening there will have been six games played.
