Softball Upset by Lamar on Opening Day of Southland Championships

HAMMOND, LA. – The fourth-seeded Incarnate Word softball team opened postseason play with a 7-5 loss to fifth-seeded Lamar University on Thursday morning in the opening round of the 2026 Southland Conference Softball Championship from North Oak Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Incarnate Word opened an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning from junior Ayla Gonzales.
  • Lamar evened the score at 1-all with a run of its own in the third, taking advantage of a UIW fielding error, before Incarnate Word retook the lead with a two-run fifth inning.
  • Senior Madison Dorrow blasted her seventh home run of the year in the fifth inning to plate two runs for the home team.
  • In the sixth, LU scored three runs to gain a 4-3 advantage before going up 7-3 with a three-run top of the seventh.
  • Incarnate Word looked to rally in the bottom half of the seventh inning as junior Erin Perez smacked a two-out RBI triple to right field, scoring two runs and cutting the deficit to 7-5. However, a pop-up to the left side of the infield ended the comeback effort.
NOTES
  • Gonzales led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while Dorrow and Perez had two RBI each.
  • Juniors Jaisy Caceres and Sydney Zenon each had a double in the contest, and SLC Player of the Year Victoria Altamirano was neutralized after being issued four walks on the day.
  • Sophomore Jenny Robledo got the start in the circle and allowed just one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
