UIW FALLS TO 2nd PLACE MSU, 76-65

Junior guard Katy Cooke led the Cardinals with 19 points on Wednesday night.

The Incarnate Word women's team fought another of the top teams in the Lone Star Conference on Wednesday night, this time traveling to Wichita Falls to face the Midwestern State Mustangs – the second place team in the LSC.

The final few minutes of the game came down to free throws and rebounding as the Cardinals closed the gap to as close as 68-65, but missed shots by Incarnate Word and clutch free throws by MSU eventually were too much for UIW to overcome and the comeback fell short, 76-65.

The Cardinals fall to 11-11 overall and 6-10 in the LSC, with the last two defeats coming to the first place (Tarleton State) and second place (MSU) teams in the conference – but also showing the UIW is fully capable of challenging the top teams in the conference.

Junior point guard Katy Cooke led the Cardinals with 19 points – hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and an impressive 5-for-5 from the three-point line – and dished out three assists as well.

Ashlyn Green and Ifunanya Mora scored 11 and 10 points and grabbed 4 and 8 rebounds, all respectively.

UIW lost the rebound battle, 41-to-34, but scored more points in the paint than MSU, 32-to-20.

Incarnate Word returns to action back in San Antonio on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Cameron University at the McDermott Center.
