VOLLEYBALL SPIKES MUSTANGS

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Coming off a 3-1 loss to Cameron University on Friday night, the University of the Incarnate Word took on Midwestern State University Saturday at home. After dropping the first set to the Mustangs, the Cardinals (8-14, 5-8) bounced back for a 3-1 win. (Box Score)

In what was set to be a crucial match for the Cardinals, the Mustangs (4-19, 2-11) held UIW to a .022 attacking percentage in set one and took the set, 25-22. Despite an early Mustang lead in set two, the Cardinals came from behind for a huge 25-20 win. This would be a pivotal turning point in the match as the Cardinals would go on to win sets three and four, 25-18 and 25-20.

Three Cardinals reached double-digit kills against Midwestern State. UIW was led by Kelci Lind (Lindale/Lindale HS) and Beth Soukup (Helotes/O'Connor HS) with 13 kills apiece, while Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) was right behind them with 12 kills.  Soukup also had nine digs.  Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) dished out 30 assists and contributed nine digs and two kills in the win. Coming up big for the Cardinals defense was Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) who finished the match with 26 digs and a service ace.

The Cardinals finished with 63 kills, 71 digs and six total team blocks.  Despite their low attacking percentage in the first set, the Cardinals managed to wrap up the match with a .215 percentage. With this win, the Cardinals keep their Lone Star Conference Tournament hopes alive.

Midwestern State registered 44 kills, 66 digs and seven total team blocks against the Cardinals. They would not better their .182 attacking percentage from the first set, finishing the match with .162.  With eight kills apiece, Courtney Henry, Beatriz Villalba and Michelle Blount would combine for 24 of the Mustangs 44 kills.

The Cardinals are back in action on Oct. 23 on the road against Angelo State at 7:00 p.m.
