CARDINALS KEEP ON ROLLING, 78-48

Playing their second game in three days, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team went into Austin and defeated St. Edward's University, 78-48, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

For the second straight game the Cardinals had four players score in double digits, led by Ifunanya Mora's 18 points. Katy Cooke wasn't far behind with 15 points and Jocelyn Jarmon had 13 (with both players adding 8 assists each). Finally, Chloe Wallace had 12 points and 9 rebounds, scoring all of her points in the second half.

The Cardinals out-rebounded the Hilltoppers, 37 to 24l pressured SEU into 24 turnovers; and limited only one player for SEU scoring more than ten points (nine of which coming on three first-half 3-pointers).

Coach Angela Lawson was especially happy with the defensive effort that her team showed and how well they adapted to the various screens and offensive schemes that St. Edwards tried to use against them.

Additionally, on the offensive side of the ball, Incarnate Word showed that it could better handle something that gave them fits last season – the full-court press.

“This year, I think we have the athletes and personnel to beat the press,” Lawson said. “Not only do we have more athletes who can handle the ball and are taller, so they can see further down the court and see their cutting teammates easier.”

The Cardinals shot out to a 42-25 lead at the half, with all but one of the UIW players who saw time on the court scoring to add to the total.

UIW hosts Texas-Permian Basin in the team's home opener on Saturday at noon.
