Heading into Saturday's showdown against cross-town rival St. Mary's University, senior Nia Torru of the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team was named Co-Player of the Week by the Heartland Conference.
Interestingly, Torru shares this week's honor with STMU's Kristin Williams.
Torru continues to lead the Cardinals this season, helping UIW remain undefeated in Heartland Conference play with a 6-0 record, including three victories last week against league opponents.
At home against Lincoln, Torru scored 13 points and had 8 steals, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in a 73-60 victory. Then, the senior scored 23 points and grabbed 7 rebounds on the road against St. Edward's University in an 80-69 win. Finally, in Laredo, Torru had 13 points, a handful of rebounds and 4 assists against Texas A&M International University.
St. Mary's comes to the McDermott Center on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff between the first-place Cardinals and second-place Rattlers (5-1).
The Rattlers' lone conference loss came in overtime to Texas-Permian Basin on December 19th in Odessa. UIW defeated UTPB, 61-58, in Odessa two days before STMU's loss.
Torru, a senior from Houston, leads the Cardinals with a 13.4 points-per-game average, which puts her in eighth place in the Heartland Conference in scoring average. This is her second Player of the Week award so far this season.
