Heather McKinney was the best player on the field for the UIW women's soccer team this past week helping to team to their first Southland Conference win of the season. This is why she is the week’s UIW Female Athlete of the Week. She will is now in the running for UIW Female Athlete of the Year award which will be voted on by the UIW Coaches and the sports administration at the end of the year.
McKinney was one of the three players to play the entire game against Conference leaders, Southern Louisiana. The Cardinals suffered a tough loss, but McKinney was the spark UIW needed to break up the shutout. In the 67th minute, she pushed forward and placed the ball for Sabrina Martineau to finish. In the first conference win of the season, McKinney was part of the defense that held off Nicholls until they scored on a penalty kick in the final three minutes of the game.
McKinney is a junior from Beeville, TX and graduated from Jones High School. The business administration major has played as a defender, midfielder and forward for the team this year.
