University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

RAINY CASTANEDA
 
She ran the fastest she ever has in cross country and the result was Rainy Castaneda being the Incarnate Word female athlete of the week for September 15 to September 21.
 
It was the National Catholic Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.  The length of the race was 5K or 3.1 miles.  Castaneda covered the distance in 18:32.16.  That was her personal career best at that distance.
 
That time also put her in 17^th place overall among the 93 runners entered in the all-Division I race.  And that time was the best among her Cardinals teammates who as a group finished seventh.
 
UIW has entered two cross country meets to date this fall and both times Castaneda has led the way.  On both occasions she has been the female athlete of the week.  She will be on the ballot next spring when Incarnate Word coaches and athletic administrators name a female athlete of the year.
 
Castaneda is a UIW junior studying political science.  She is from Laredo’s United South High School.
