The Incarnate Word women’s swimming and diving team was dominant in the only competition in the time frame January 5 to January 11 winning every event in the dual meet against Southwestern University.
 
There were lots of Cardinals touching first but Lana Nguyen came to the fore with three wins in her four events making her the female athlete of the week.
 
She began the day by anchoring the winning UIW team in the 200-medley relay.  She followed that with a victory in the 200-freestyle in a time of 1:56.77 which was three and a half seconds ahead of the next swimmer.
 
Her only non-winning effort came in the 100-breaststroke where her time of 1:08.01 was only six-tenths of a second after the winner.  Finally, she returned in the 200-breaststroke and hit the wall first in 2:30.09 which was just short of five second ahead of the runner-up.
 
This is the second time this season for Nguyen to be female athlete of the week.  And she will be on the yearend ballot when UIW coaches and athletic administrators select a female athlete of the year.  She is a senior from Kiev, Ukraine, and she is studying fashion design at UIW.
