In the final game of the softball season Mikaela Flores tattooed the ball as if she were in the batting cage rather than facing live pitching and as a result she is the Incarnate Word female athlete of the week for April 28 to May 4.
 
And with that performance she finishes the year as the team’s leader in three significant categories.
 
It was in Abilene against Abilene Christian in a Southland Conference series.  The Cardinals won the game 12-4 and Flores was directly responsible for more than half of the runs total.
 
She went 2-4 at the plate.  Both hits went over the fence for home runs.  Those two big blasts accounted for six runs batted in.  Plus, she scored one other time on a teammate’s safe hit.
 
In the four-game week she was 5 of 13 for .385.  She scored four runs with the six RBI.  Her slugging percentage for the seven days was .846.  And rightly so, she was the team’s designated hitter over the week.
 
Those numbers put her at a .404 batting average for the year along with .629 slugging and six home runs.  She led the team in all three categories.
 
Flores is a freshman from Lockhart.  She is studying kinesiology at UIW.  She now will be on the ballot for female athlete of the year when Cardinals coaches and athletic administrators make that selection.
