University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

It was a good week, March 17 to March 23, for Incarnate Word men’s tennis and in particular for Josip Smoljan as he earned athlete of the week honors at UIW.

The Cardinals were unbeaten in the week as was Smoljan.

He played at number three singles in two matches winning both times in straight sets.  His closest call was a tie-breaker in the first set against Cameron before winning 6-2 in the second set.  Against Texas-Pan American he was near untouchable winning 6-1, 6-0.

Over in doubles play he and his partner won 8-2 against Cameron while their match at UTPA was unfinished as the Cardinals captured enough team points for the victory before the Smoljan twosome could conmplete play.

Smoljan is a sophomore from Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina.  He is studying business administration at UIW.  He will be on the ballot for male athlete of the year when that selection is made by Incarnate Word coaches and athletic administrators at year’s end.
