LUANDA, ANGOLA – University of the Incarnate Word sophomore fencer, Yassin Khodir, stood atop the podium on Saturday, March 1st, winning the Junior Sabre Individual African Fencing Championship hosted by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). On Sunday, Khodir led the Egyptian team to a victory in the team event.
In the individual event, Khodir won the final bout against fellow Egyptian, Ahmed Hesham, by a tight 15-14 decision. He finished the competition atop the standings with 48 total points, followed by Hesham with 39.
In the team event, Egypt earned a bye to the final, where they faced Algeria who defeated Senegal in the semi-finals. The Egyptian team won the contest over Algeria to secure the number one ranking.
Hoping to qualify for the national championships, Khodir will next be competing March 8th and 9th in Colorado Springs. The Cardinals will be competing in the NCAA West regionals on the 8th and the MPSF Conference Championships on the 9th.
