SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of the Incarnate Word hosted the fifth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Fencing Championship at the Alice P. McDermott Center in San Antonio on Sunday. The event featured UIW, UC San Diego and the United States Air Force Academy.
UIW finished third in both the men's and women's team competitions, falling to the Tritons in the men's semifinals and the Falcons in the women's semifinals. UC San Diego claimed its second consecutive women's championship while Air Force secured its first MPSF title on the men's side.
The Cardinals' best individual finish came in the men's saber competition. Yassin Khodir earned victory in the semifinal round 15-12, but ultimately fell in the final. Khodir picked up UIW's lone individual silver medal of the event.
Four other Incarnate Word athletes earned a share of the bronze medal in their respective events due to losses in the semifinal round. Those athletes qualified to participate in the MPSF Championship, which featured four-person brackets for men's and women's foil, épée and saber, based on their performances in Saturday's NCAA West Regional Championship.
UIW's semifinalists were Adham Shalaby in men's saber, Gracyn Githens in women's épée, Amelia Dungey in women's saber and Jenna Baly in women's foil.
