Six Men’s Tennis Athletes Earn All-Conference Recognition; Andersson Named Coach of the Year

SAN ANTONIO — The league office announced Thursday morning that six student-athletes from the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team received all-conference recognition. Emilio Vila and Jonas Andersson received superlative awards, being named Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.  

Tomas Reche, Andoni Garmendia, and Arnau Miralles earned first team status in singles play. Reche and Vila along with Miralles and Noah DeLuna earned first team honors in doubles play. Joao Sasso and Garmendia were named to the second team in doubles play.  

Jonas Andersson – Coach of the Year 

In his sixth season, Andersson led his team to an 18-4 overall record and an undefeated 4-0 mark in conference play.  

Emilio Vila – Newcomer of the Year and No. 2 Doubles First Team 

Vila's first year in San Antonio was a tremendous success. He started the season ranked #124 in the nation and saw continued success throughout the season. Vila finished 16-5 in singles play and 11-3 in doubles play with his partner Reche.  

Tomas Reche – No. 3 Singles First Team and No. 2 Doubles First Team

Reche saw plenty of success in his senior season at UIW. He finished 5-0 in the No. 3 spot in singles play and 11-3 in doubles play with Vila.  

Andoni Garmendia – No. 4 Singles First Team and No. 1 Doubles Second Team 

In his junior season, Garmendia finished 15-2 in singles play, including a 6-0 record in the No. 4 spot. He and doubles partner Sasso picked up 12 wins, 11 of which came at the No. 1 position.  

Arnau Miralles – No. 5 Singles First Team and No. 3 Doubles First Team 

The senior from Catalunya recorded a .765 winning percentage in singles play with 13 wins and only four loses. Miralles and his doubles partner DeLuna finished 9-3 with seven of those wins coming in the No. 3 spot.  

Noah DeLuna – No 3 Doubles First Team 

The hometown kid teamed up with Miralles in doubles play to reach a mark of 13-4 overall. In the No. 5 singles spot DeLuna picked up six wins in six tries.  

Joao Sasso – No. 1 Doubles Second Team 

In his final season at UIW Sasso teamed up with Garmendia in doubles play to finish 12-6 overall. Sasso spent most of his time at the No. 1 position in singles play, recording 11 wins for the Cardinals.  

After winning the regular season title, the Cardinals will take on Lamar on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. A win will put them in the conference championship match on Saturday at 4 p.m.
