NEWTON - The University of the Incarnate Word men's golf team finished in second place out of 14 teams with a final score of 868 at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational hosted by Wichita State.
Veteran senior Ken-Marten Soo led the Cardinals on day one with a 71 followed by Francisco Taboada who was at par. Joe Buenfeld had a 73, Carson Hunsucker finished with a 77 and Jack Ward rounded out the crew on day one with an 81.
Soo had an incredible showing in the second round, shooting 6-under-par on the day. His round was highlighted by his fifth hole which he finished in just two strokes on a par-4. Buenfeld was 2-under-par in round two, Taboada and Hunsucker both finished with an even 72 and Ward was at 80. The Cardinals were in first place heading into round three and were at 573.
The final round saw Hunsucker shooting 1-under to lead the way followed by Buenfeld at 72. Soo and Taboada both shot 4-over-par while Ward had a 77.
UIW had two golfers finishing in the top-10 at the end of the tournament. Soo sat tied for fourth and at 3-under-par while Buenfeld was tied for seventh and shot 1-under-par. Hunsucker and Taboada were both 4-over-par and tied for 26th and Ward was tied for 81st, respectively.
The UIW men's golf team heads to Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete in the Herb Wimberly Memorial on Monday, October 14th and Tuesday the 15th hosted by New Mexico State.
