SAN ANTONIO - The Southland Conference announced winners of the 2023 postseason volleyball awards on Wednesday, November 15. Among the winners, senior outside hitter Annamarie Alvarez from the University of the Incarnate Word was named to the Second Team All-Southland.
Despite missing a few games due to injury, Alvarez maintained her dominance in the conference by holding the top spot in hitting percentage for the league all season long. With a .404 kill average on her total 394 attacks on the year, she had the highest percentage with the third to least sets played in the top 10 of the SLC.
"I am so proud of Anna and her accomplishments this season! She stepped into a new role as the second middle after I arrived at UIW. Anna embraced the offense I brought in and excelled at it, which is more than I could've asked for," stated Head Coach Gabby Ording. "She's so deserving of this All-Conference award, and I know she will represent well at the tournament."
The Los Angeles native totaled 203 kills on the year, earning her season-best 18 at Texas A&M-Commerce on October 5. Throughout the 94 sets she's played, Alvarez has averaged 2.16 kills per set. As an all-around force for the Cardinals, she helps on the defense side as well. Alvarez has the second most blocks for the Cardinals with 79.
