SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word quarterback, Richard Torres, was named the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman Player of the Week following a second-half surge over McNeese State University on Saturday to come back and defeat the Cowboys 35-24.
The San Antonio native started the second half for the Cardinals, fighting a 24-7 deficit. On his first drive, Torres led UIW on a 14-play, 83-yard drive that was capped off by a touchdown pass to Brandon Porter. With Torres at the helm, the Cardinals found the end zone on three of their final four drives of the game, taking it by a final score of 35-24.
Torres finished the game with a 61 percent completion percentage, racking up 161 yards through the air and three passing touchdowns, while adding one rushing TD.
