SAN ANTONIO – Strong defense late in the game carried the University of the Incarnate baseball team to a 4-2 victory over No. 20 Texas State University (TXST) on Tuesday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
 
Carson Rollins pitched six innings, allowing just one run to secure his first win of the season. Roberto Gonzalez finished the night with two hits and one run, while Jimmy De Leon led the team in RBIs with two.
 
The Bobcats struck first with an RBI single to right field (1-0).
 
In the third frame, De Leon was hit by a pitch. Then, Joey Baran reached first on a Bobcat error while De Leon advanced to third. Ridge Rogers grounded out to bring De Leon home (1-1). Taylor Darden reached first on another error and Baran scored to give the Cardinals the lead (2-1).
 
De Leon smacked the ball past two Texas State defenders into center field to bring home two runners in the fourth inning (4-1).
 
With the bases loaded in the seventh, TXST hit an RBI single through the right side (4-2), but Kaddin Mikulik struck out the next two batters swinging to close out the top of the seventh.
 
The Cardinals caught two balls on the warning track in the eighth and UIW cruised to a 4-2 victory.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals head into the Southland Conference portion of the season with a three-game series at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. UIW faces the Islanders on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m. CT to open the series.
