Five Football Student-Athletes Named AP All-Americans

SAN ANTONIO – The Associated Press announced five University of the Incarnate Word football student-athletes were named to the FCS All-America team presented by Regions Bank. Lindsey Scott Jr. was named to the first team while his teammates, Darion Chafin, Taylor Grimes, Caleb Johnson, and Kelechi Anyalebechi all received third team honors.
 
Scott has thrown for 4,404 yards and 59 touchdowns along with rushing for 388 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season. It was a record-breaking season for the first-year Cardinal as he now holds the record for most touchdowns responsible for (68), passing touchdowns in a season (59) and is tied for most touchdowns in a single game with seven. Scott has racked up several awards including NCAA FCS Player of the Week, FCS Stats Perform Offensive Player of the Week, Southland Conference Player of the Week (2x), and Southland Player of the Year. He was also named as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and will be attending the ceremony in Frisco on Jan. 7.
 
Darion Chafin also broke records this year for UIW. With 262 yards against Nevada, Chafin broke the single-game record for receiving yards. He also was tied for most touchdowns on the team with 17. His partner in crime Taylor Grimes also grabbed 15 touchdowns this season and is now the career record holder for receptions and touchdowns scored. Both of the receivers recorded season-high three touchdown games this year.
 
Offensive lineman Caleb Johnson has started every game for UIW in the 2022 season. He was a part of one of the best offensive lines in the country only allowing 17 sacks this season and helped the Cardinals rush for 2,754 yards this season.
 
Kelechi Anyalebechi, the career record holder for tackles, solo tackles, forced fumbles and QB hurries also played a big role for UIW this season. He recorded 112 total tackles, 63 solos, this season, 15 of which came from a single game against Texas A&M Commerce. The linebacker also had 10 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, three pass breakups and two interceptions, one for a touchdown.
 
The All-American Cardinals have continued to roll in the post-season and are set to take on North Dakota State in the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs.
