SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word faced the Colonels of Nicholls on Saturday, October 16 in an early 11 a.m. kickoff. The Cardinals won 38-21 and Taylor Grimes broke the program record with four receiving touchdowns in one game.
 
Cameron Ward passed for 388 yards, making this his fourth game in a row completing 300 plus yards. Ward also advances to second in UIW program history passing for 40 career touchdowns, needing four more to tie the current leader. Grimes completed 182 receiving yards for four touchdowns, breaking the single game receiving touchdown record for the Cardinals. Kevin Brown rushed for 80 yards and one touchdown. Kelechi Anyalebechi led the Cardinal defense with 12 total tackles bringing his season total to 64.
 
The Colonels took an early 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Ward quickly answered back with a 51-yard touchdown pass to Grimes, cutting the Colonels lead in half. Nicholls gets back on the board with another touchdown. Ward again finds Grimes and the duo picks up another Cardinal touchdown. The Colonels look to score once more just before the half with a pass into the end zone that's intercepted by UIW's Akil Jones.
 
The Cardinals, down 21-14 at the half, come out to hold Nicholl scoreless in the third quarter as they tie the game up 21-21 with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Ward to Grimes.
 
Five minutes into the fourth quarter, UIW takes the lead 28-21 as Ward finds Grimes once more. The Cardinals get stopped at the 40-yard line and Carson Mohr puts three more points on the board with a field goal. Seth Jacquees picks up a sac and Darien Townsend recovers the fumble to get the ball back. With just under a minute left in the game, Kevin Brown has a 26-yard rushing touchdown to put the Cardinals up 38-21.
 
The Cardinals remain undefeated in Southland Conference play and improve to 5-1 on the season.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana to face McNeese for the second time this season. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on October 23.
