Women’s hoops returns to action with a four-game home stand

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team returns to action to kick off Southland Conference play with a four-game home stand starting with the 2020-21 SLC preseason favorite SFA on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m. CT.
 
The Cardinals then have a quick turnaround with a matchup against Northwestern State on Monday inside the McDermott Center at 3 p.m.

CARDINAL QUICK FACTS
  • UIW sits ninth in conference standings and is the only team with no SLC games in the books yet.
  • The red and black closed out 2020 and the non-conference schedule on the road against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech on Dec. 29.
  • In five career starts, freshman Jaaucklyn Moore leads the squad with 11.6 ppg. (13th SLC), with an impeccable 8-for-8 from the charity line and shooting well from beyond the arc at a rate of 34.5%.
  • Three Cardinals rank among the top 20 in 3-point percentage in the league: Destiny Jenkins at 35.7% (11th), Arielle Adams at 35.3% (14th) and Moore at 34.5% (15th).
  • UIW's 3-point defense in five games, holding opponents to just 23.2%, leads the Southland Conference and currently sits 18th-best in the nation.
 
SCOUTING THE LADYJACKS
  • Last time the two teams faced each other on Feb. 22, 2020, UIW took down SFA 60-52, marking the first win over the Ladyjacks in program history. SFA holds an 11-1 advantage in head-to-heads.
  • A combination of stout defense that is holding opponents to just 51.2 ppg and a league-best 47.8% accuracy from the field has placed SFA (11-2, 3-0 SLC) at the top of the league standings heading into Saturday's matchup.
  • The Ladyjacks are led by Zya Nugent's 13.7 ppg. (fifth SLC). The sophomore guard has scored in double-figures in 10-of-13 games.
  • Stephanie Visscher is also a big contributor to the Ladyjack offense with 11.8 ppg. (11th SLC) while dishing out an average 2.9 assists per game (eighth SLC). 
  • Junior Aiyana Johnson has been a powerhouse defender for SFA, averaging a league-best 1.9 blocked shots and a team-high 6.3 boards per game while averaging 4.5 defensive rebounds per contest.
  • SFA has four sharpshooters from the field that rank among the top 10 in the league in FG percentage: Alyssa Mayfield at 54.3% (fourth), Johnson at 52.8% (fifth), Visscher at 52.3% (seventh) and Nugent at 50.4% (eighth).
  • The Ladyjacks have the best turnover margin in the league (9.85) as they force their opponents to turn the rock over 25.9 times per game while they turn it over an average of just 16.1 times.
 
SCOUTING THE LADY DEMONS
  • UIW and Northwestern State are tied in head-to-heads, 4-4, dating back to Jan. 30, 2014. The Cardinals swept the series last season, first with an overtime win on the road for their first road victory of the season and then returning to the McDermott Center to win the game at the end of regulation.
  • Anessa Dussette leads the team in scoring with 9.3 ppg and shooting at 45.9% from the field, while contributing a team-high 5.4 boards per game, which ranks 15th in the SLC.
  • Tristen Washington is also among the top scorers for the purple and white at a rate of 9.1 ppg.
  • Northwestern State played a tough nonconference slate that saw them fall to two top 10 ranked teams early in the season in No. 7 Baylor and then No. 9 Texas A&M.
