FRISCO, Texas – University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis student-athlete Jelena Dordan was named to the 2020 Southland Conference Women's Tennis All-Academic second team, announced the conference office Thursday.
 
"I couldn't be prouder of Jelena and her selection to the Southland's Academic All-Conference Team," said UIW head coach Devin Wilke. "I know how much pride she has taken in regards to her high standards of academic success, not only this year, but ever since she stepped on to campus at UIW. Because of that, she is the perfect example of a true student-athlete.
 
"Being selected to this conference all-academic team as an international student, where English is not her first language, is a true testament of her hard work and character. I am very glad to see that her years of hard work have paid off and that she can be recognized for her achievements"
 
Dordan is a senior accounting major with a 3.91 GPA, showing her focus and dedication to academics as well as athletics. She cares about her community, completing 38 hours of community service over the 2019-20 academic year. She has earned Dean's List accolades each semester between the fall of 2017 and the fall of 2019. Dordan was also named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in the spring of 2018 and 2019.
 
Dordan was nominated to the Delta Mu Delta International Honors Society and was selected for membership in the Golden Key International Honor Society. Additionally, the Caplijina, Bosnia & Herzegovenia, native has a membership for the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
 
On the court, she competed primarily on court one (singles) for UIW, recording four singles wins and three doubles victories prior to the season being cut short.
 
To earn all-academic honors, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) through the semester prior to the sports' championship and have completed at least ONE full academic year at the nominating institution prior to the season in which the nomination occurs (true freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible). Traditionally, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests during the most recently completed season. However, with the shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the participation requirement was waved for this season.
