Balentine named to SLC men’s basketball all-academic team

FRISCO, Texas – University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball student-athlete Des Balantine earned 2019-20 Southland Men's Basketball All-Academic second team honors, announced the league office Tuesday. This is Balentine's first such accolade after redshirting for the Cardinals during the 2018-19 academic year.

"It was great to hear captain Des made academic all-conference," said UIW head coach Carson Cunningham. "He's been a dynamo in the lecture hall since arriving on campus. On the court, he was able to battle back from injury and put together a fantastic conference hoops season, which was great to see. I'm excited for him and his fellow Cardinals to get back on the hardwood this upcoming season, and I'm excited for him to start graduate studies this fall."

Balentine was selected by his teammates as the UIW captain for the 2019-20 season and is a men's basketball Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative. A general studies major, Balentine holds a 3.31 GPA and has completed 41.5 hours of community service this year.

The Kokomo, Indiana, native played in 27 games for the Cardinals and started in 14. He recorded a 46.9 shooting percentage from the field and played an average of 22.9 minutes per game.
