UIW takes down Trinity in decisive 101-65 win

SAN ANTONIO – Five Cardinals scored in double figures as the University of the Incarnate Word defeated Trinity on Saturday in emphatic fashion, 101-65.

"It was really nice to see the fellas get a rhythm offensively and share the apple to the tune of 24 assists," Cardinals coach Carson Cunningham said. "We locked in defensively after a bit of a slow start on that end. Trinity runs some nifty motion under Coach Pat Cunningham. Fortunately, our guys adjusted quickly. Now the players will rest a bit, gear up for finals, and we'll build on this as we prepare for our first conference game at Central Arkansas on Dec. 18."

NOTABLES
  • Sophomore guard Dwight Murray Jr. put up season highs in points (19) and assists (five) to go along with three rebounds and a steal. He also sank 5-6 free throws, maintaining his impressive season percentage at 88.9 percent from the line.
  • Freshman guard Drew Lutz exited the game early in the second half, but finished with 19 points, four assists, a rebound and a steal.
  • Freshman guard Keaston Willis continues to shoot the lights out from beyond the arc, registering his fourth game with four three-pointers made. He finished the night with 16 points and four rebounds while posting career highs in assists (four) and steals (two).
  • Freshman center Marcus Larrson tallied career highs in points (nine) and rebounds (seven), using his size and physicality to get whatever he wanted in the paint.
  • Freshman forward Corey Sato recorded career highs in points (12), rebounds (seven) and blocked shots (one) in a breakout performance.
  • Junior forward Augustine Ene had another solid outing, scoring 12 points and tying his career high in rebounds with eight.
  • Freshman forward Vincent Miszkiewicz continued his dominance on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds, which marks the sixth game he's grabbed at least nine boards.
  • The Cardinals as a whole recorded season highs in points (101), rebounds (53), assists (24), field goals made (36) and three-pointers made (13).
  • UIW outscored Trinity in the paint 38-18, on fast breaks 20-5, and on second chance points, 11-4.
  • The Cardinals absolutely dominated in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 56-32 to close out an impressive win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF

UIW's first three field goals came from behind the three-point line as the Cardinals raced out to a 9-5 lead. The Tigers responded with a 9-2 scoring run to take a 16-13 lead. Larsson and Lutz made the next four baskets for UIW, the latter connecting on a pair of three-pointers to spark an 18-7 run. Ene hit back-to-back layups and Murray Jr. hit all three free throws on a last-second foul at the three-point line, and the Cardinals went into the break leading the Tigers, 45-33.

SECOND HALF
The Cardinals came out of the second half on fire, putting together a 12-2 scoring run behind a couple of threes from Lutz and Willis, and a pair of jumpers from the same duo. The Tigers had no answer for the Cardinals throughout the second period, getting attacked from all angles by the likes of Lutz, Murray, Larsson and Sato. UIW moved the ball efficiently, recording assists on 12 of its 22 baskets in the half, while locking down Trinity defensively. The Cardinals closed out the game on a 21-12 scoring run, capped off by a layup from Sato in the game's final seconds - much to the crowd's satisfaction as UIW surpassed the 100-point mark.
