SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word football Head Coach
Eric Morris has announced the addition of
Wendel Davis to the 2019 coaching staff. Davis will serve as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Â
"I'm excited to have Wendel joining our family," said UIW Head Coach
Eric Morris. "He has a diverse collection of experience at several different levels of college football, which will help push our student-athletes and staff to be better every day. He has worked with very quality coaches and has a wealth of knowledge that will benefit our entire program."
Â
Davis comes to UIW after spending two years (2016-18) at the University of Georgia, where he was a defensive graduate assistant. While with the Bulldogs, Davis worked with inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann, assisted with recruiting, helped coach the defensive scout team, and led daily scout team meetings, among other coaching and administrative duties.
Â
"I want to thank Coach Morris and the entire UIW football family for the opportunity to be a small part of this great university," said Davis. "I look forward to helping our student athletes continue to reach success both on and off the field. To Coach Smart and the UGA football family and staff, thank you for the great memories and relationships that were formed. I am excited to be home, GO CARDS!"
Â
Davis mentored Roquan Smith, winner of the 2017 Butkus Award, SEC Championship MVP, 2017 AP first team All-SEC selection, Nagurski Trophy finalist, Bednarik Award finalist, and the team captain.
Â
In 2017, Davis was part of a coaching staff that led UGA to a 13-2 record and the fourth-ranked team in total defense. The team was also ranked No. 5 in scoring defense, No. 3 in pass defense, and No. 12 in rush defense. The Bulldogs went on to become SEC champions, Rose Bowl champions, and College Football Playoff National Championship Finalists.
Â
Davis, a native of Sweeny, Texas, spent the 2015 season at the University of Texas in a quality control role, where he worked with the defensive line. He managed scripts and practice scheduling, coached the offensive scout team and held scout team meetings in addition to being responsible for opponent breakdowns and scouting reports.
Â
Prior to his stint at Texas, Davis spent two seasons (2013-15) as inside linebackers coach at Texas A&M Commerce University. He was part of a staff that helped turn around a 1-9 record in 2012 to 7-5 in 2013. The turnaround continued as Davis and the new staff led the team to a conference championship in 2014.
Â
Davis began his coaching career as the inside linebackers coach at West Texas A&M for three seasons (2010-12). In his final season, the team went 12-3, winning the conference and advancing to the Division II semifinals.
Â
Davis was a two-year starter at linebacker for Arkansas, playing from 2006-09. He recorded 164 career tackles in 47 game and was appointed team captain for his senior season. He was elected freshman All-SEC after his first season.
Â
Davis graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology from Arkansas in 2010 and holds a graduate degree in Education Administration from Texas A&M Commerce in 2014.
