HOUSTON – Adam Herrera set a new school record in the 3,000m steeplechase to help the Cardinals finish strong at the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet. Herrera shattered the previous record by six seconds and finished runner-up in the event with a time of 9:14.93. He improved his personal best by exactly nine seconds and moves up to third place in conference rankings.
LEADERS
The women's 4x100 relay of
LaShawnda Simmons,
Jane Arinze,
Victoria Jackson and
Erekha Sebastion posted its best mark of the season with a time of 45.96.
Tiffani Mays crossed the line in 55.12 to place third in the 400m, while
Erekha Sebastion took fifth with a 56.08 outdoor collegiate best.
Megan Hernandez and
Stephanie Diaz each set new PRs in the 3,000m steeplechase. Hernandez shaved off seventeen seconds and took third in 11:19.88. Diaz dropped two seconds off of her previous best for an 11:28.52 fifth-place finish.
Deja Keys posted a time of 12.23 in the 100m and finished fifth. Keys also led the Cardinal women in the 200m as she clocked in at 24.69 for seventh place.
Myah Antwi recorded a toss of 13.30m/43-7.75 in the women's shot put and placed sixth.
Gabrielle Estrada finished seventh in the discus with a mark of 41.90m/137-06.
Keila Rodriguez and
Katherine Ramirez placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 1500m. Rodriguez crossed the line in 4:45.76, while Ramirez checked in at 4:47.07 for a new PR.
Elizabeth Alvarado also claimed a personal best as she finished in 4:57.14.
On the men's side,
Jorge Quintero outlasted sixteen other competitors in his heat for a section win, and meet victory, in the 1500m. Quintero posted his second best collegiate time of 3:54.53 to become the fourth fastest Cardinal in the event in school history.
Kelechi Emeodi recorded a leap of 14.50m/47-07 and took third in the men's triple jump.
Rodney Littlejohn set a new PR in the 400m of 49.88.
Matthew Hernandez and
Jordan Cherin set solid PRs in the 800m. Hernandez (1:52.57) and Cherin (1:52.91) both shaved two seconds off of their previous bests for eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Louie Barba wrapped the meet up for the Cardinals with a new PR of 15:35.53 in the 5000m.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals have their final tune-up before the conference championships at the Texas State Invitational. The meet will take place at Bobcat Track and Field Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, on April 27-28.
