UIW Softball Hosts UTSA in Mid-Week Clash

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For the first time in 20 years, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team will host UTSA. The mid-week clash between the Cardinals and Roadrunners is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cardinals Field.
 
FIRST PITCH
 
The last time UIW softball hosted UTSA was on March 25, 1998, where the two teams split a doubleheader: UTSA won game one, 6-1, while UIW was victorious in game two, 4-0.
 
UTSA leads the all-time series, 18-5. Last season, the Cardinals played the Roadrunners twice at the UTSA Tournament in late February. UIW won a thriller in the tournament's opener, 5-4 in nine innings, and lost the tournament finale two days later, 10-2.

Summary: UTSA snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 Conference USA win over Marshall on Apr. 8. Bailee Baldwin leads the conference in home runs (15) and ranks 19th in batting average (.350). Celese Loughman has a .325 batting average, with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, and nine RBIs. She is 13-for-16 in stolen bases and is tied with Baldwin in runs (28).  Ashlynn Walls' 10 doubles ranks her T-6th in C-USA. In the circle, Lizzy Fox is 10-7 with a 2.07 ERA, 12 complete games, three shutouts, one save, and 47 strikeouts. As a team, the Roadrunners are last in C-USA in batting average (.240), but 4th in ERA (2.93).

Summary: UIW took the first game from a Northwestern State team tied for first place in the Southland Conference standings, but the Lady Demons won games two and three to win the series.
 
On the season, Hope Sobolewski ranks 31st in the Southland Conference with a .299 batting average, going 26-for-87 with two doubles, three home runs, four runs scored, and a team-best 16 RBIs. Her .432 average in conference games ranks 7th in the league. Marcela Lopez is batting .267 with 20 hits, one double, five RBIs, seven runs, and a team-best three stolen bases. Delaney Guzman has hit a Cardinal-best four home runs and her 10 runs scored trail leader Angel Villanueva's 11. In the circle, Breanna Hernandez continues her strong play, as she is 4-7 with a 4.05 ERA, seven complete games, one shutout, and 30 strikeouts. Sarah Leal is 7-9 with a 4.62 ERA, nine complete games, and a staff-best 52 strikeouts. As a team, the Cardinals rank 11th in both team batting average (.227) and ERA (4.67).
 
UP NEXT

UIW resumes Southland Conference play this weekend at Abilene Christian for a three-game series. Friday's single game is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon and 2 p.m.

The Cardinals host Texas State next Wednesday in the final part of a home-and-home series with the Bobcats. TXST doubled up the Cardinals, 6-3, on Mar. 13 in San Marcos.
