SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team fell to McNeese State University in four sets in the McDermott Convocation Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW and McNeese both entered the competition ready for action. The teams battled back and forth for the lead through much of the first. The Cowgirls went on a six point streak for a 15-10 advantage over the Cardinals. UIW was not able to catch up to McNeese and suffered a 25-16 opening set defeat.
The second set started off in favor of the Cardinals. The Cowgirls evened the score at 5-5, but UIW soon responded to regain the lead. The Cardinal momentum continued for a 25-21 set victory. UIW registered 16 kills and three errors in the second for a .265 attacking percentage while McNeese tallied 15 kills and three errors.
Set three started off much like the first as both teams had their share at the lead. The Cowgirls capitalized on Cardinal errors to go on a seven point streak. UIW had seven kills and five errors in the third set. McNeese registered 12 kills and four errors to be more efficient and top UIW 25-15.
McNeese outlasted the Cardinals to win the final set 25-22. UIW finished the night with 45 kills to fall short of the 46 made by the Cowgirls.
LEADERS
Cameron Edwards led the team with 13 kills while
Julia Monday followed with nine.
Madison Williams paced the team with 37 assists. Defensively,
Sarea Alexander registered five blocks and
Madelynn Miller tallied 31 digs.
Shanna Spree, Rae Myers and Keegan Nelms all had nine kills for McNeese.

The Cardinals continue competition on their home court as they face Nicholls on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m.
