SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team got its first home victory of the season in the McDermott Center. The Cardinals outlasted the Colonels for a 3-1 win improving their record to 2-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals led Nicholls 5-1 before the Colonels got their attack going for a six point streak to take a 7-5 advantage. UIW retaliated with five straight points to regain their lead. The Cardinals beat Nicholls 25-18 to open the match. UIW had an efficient first set as the squad registered 14 kills and two errors for a
.375 attacking percentage.
Set two started off in favor of the Colonels and the Cardinals trailed the visiting team 6-1. UIW had the opportunity to take the lead in the second, but 11 kills and five errors did not allow the team to outlast its opponents who tallied 11 kills and two errors. The Colonels took set two 25-16 to tie the match 1-1.
The third was a close set, but UIW edged over Nicholls for a 25-23 success. Both teams had a turn at the lead, but a shift occurred when the Cardinals went on a five point streak to take advantage of the set and pressure the Colonels into a timeout. UIW fired 17 kills over the net in set three for a .308 attacking percentage.
The last six points of the match were made by the Cardinals as they went on to win the final set 25-16. UIW tallied 53 kills as a team for a 3-1 victory over the Colonels.
LEADERS
Autumn Lockley led the Cardinals with 15 kills and seven digs.
Bryaunea Hall followed with 12 kills and two blocks.
Madison Williams paced the team with 40 assists. Defensively,
Sarea Alexander registered six blocks and
Madelynn Miller tallied 19 digs.
Brieanna Hill and Emily Weimer were the top performers for Nicholls with 14 and nine kills respectively.
UP NEXT
UIW will head to Natchitoches, Louisiana to battle Northwestern State University at 6:30 p.m. in the Prather Coliseum.

The Cardinals continue competition on the road as they head to Conway to face Central Arkansas. Action will take place on Oct. 5 at 12 p.m. in the Prince Center.
