EDINBURG, Texas- The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team wrapped up the final day of the UTRGV Tournament with a 3-2 defeat by Texas Southern University.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set one began in favor of UIW with a kill by Maddie Slaughter and ball handling error on TSU. The Lady Tigers capitalized on errors made by the Cardinals to even up the score. The teams battled back and forth for the lead until TSU went on a five point run for a 22-17 advantage over UIW. The Cardinals were not able to keep up as the Lady Tigers took set one 25-19.

The second set of the match was a better fight for UIW, but the team was not able to hold off the attack of the Lady Tigers. A 23-23 score ended in a 25-23 victory for TSU as the squad scored its final two points off of a Cardinal error and kill by Asia Howard.

UIW found a rhythm in sets three and four. The Cardinals had 15 kills and two errors in set three, while registering 10 kills and no errors in set four for a .400 attacking percentage.   UIW triumphed over TSU 28-26 in the third set and 25-16 in set four to tie the match 2-2.

The Cardinals led the Lady Tigers through much of the fifth, but were not able to finish the set for a match win.  Set five was a close battle, but TSU came out on top with a 16-14 success. The Cardinals concluded the final day of the UTRGV tournament with 49 kills and a .158 attacking percentage.  

LEADERS

Bryaunea Hall had 12 kills and four blocks for UIW. Maddie Slaughter also contributed 12 kills and Madison Williams paced the team with 35 assists. Miller led the Cardinals with 20 digs while Lockley tallied 18.

Alexis Austin and Nicole Robinson both registered 16 kills for the Lady Tigers.

UP NEXT

The Cardinals are set to open conference in New Orleans, Louisiana against the Privateers. The match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Human Performance Center.

UIW is scheduled to play Southeastern Louisiana for its second conference match of the season. The battle will take place in Hammond, Louisiana on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. in the University Center.
